Before an evening out, plan the trip home
Check last services, the full chain of connections and the date after midnight—then choose a sensible moment to review your return plan.

Give the end of the evening a little attention
A meal, a performance or a long conversation can move your departure later than expected. Before making an evening plan, decide how you intend to leave as well as how you will arrive. The useful question is not simply when the network closes, but whether the whole journey works from your actual starting place to where you need to finish. [1] [2]
Treat general opening hours as a starting point
WMATA’s new-rider guide distinguishes general operating hours from the specific first and last train times available through its rider tools. That distinction is useful beyond Washington: a system-wide closing time is not a departure time for your particular station, direction or connection. Look up the services you need instead of turning a headline closing hour into a personal deadline. [1]
Check the planned finish time at the venue, then allow for getting out of the building and reaching the boarding point. If your plan includes collecting a coat or bag, meeting someone outside or finding a different entrance, put that into your own departure decision. Do not assume the final advertised service leaves enough time for those steps. [2] [1]
Read the connection, not just the first ride
Use the operator’s journey tools for the complete return, including any change of line or mode and the final approach. Read each departure and arrival in order. A first ride that still appears in a timetable is not, by itself, evidence that the next connection will work. If the connection is unclear, ask the relevant operator before relying on it. [1]
Try an earlier finish as well as your preferred one. Choose a workable option you would actually be comfortable using, rather than aiming for the final possible departure. There is no single buffer that suits all venues, stops and travelers. [1] [2]
Check which night and which service
London provides a clear example of why the day matters: TfL lists Night Tube on selected lines on Friday and Saturday nights. That does not establish overnight service on another line, on another night or in another city. Read the local operator’s current information for your specific journey. [3]
If you expect to leave after midnight, check the calendar date and time shown in the journey search. Read any timetable day labels and notes rather than assuming an evening’s name tells you which departure to select. Keep the outward and return searches separate. [2] [3]
Choose a moment to look again
TfL labels its first-and-last-service downloads as working timetables and warns that actual times can vary. Use a published plan as preparation, then check current information before leaving the venue. If dinner runs late or you add another stop, reassess before committing to the extra activity. [2]
- Where will I finish, and which date and time am I planning for?
- How will I reach the correct boarding point from the venue?
- Does the whole chain of connections still work?
- What earlier departure or other confirmed option would I use if plans change?
- When will I pause to recheck the operator’s current information?
Start with a place, then check the journey home
Choose your city in CarFree and open a place that interests you. Use its details as a starting point for your outing, then check the relevant operator’s information for the return you need. The city chooser opens available catalogs in a browser; it does not promise overnight transport, a tested connection or the same journey options everywhere. [4]
